What’s on...for Young People?
We have a wide range of generic activities, trips, workshops and projects that run at the ASTA. Some of these are young people led and in most cases the original ideas for the activity, discussion or trip out are generated by the young people themselves. We also do targeted work and seek out particular groups of young people to work with. Below is a list of what’s on:
- Music Recording Studio
- Two pool tables (for use in tournaments, competitions, etc)
- Air hockey table
- Table Tennis
- I.T. Suite that have (9) machines with Microsoft Office and Internet Access
- A main hall (80 people approx capacity)
- T.V, DVD, PS2 and Hi-Fi systems
- Youth Forum
- Football Team (Silvertown F.C.)
- Volunteering/ training opportunities (Aged 16+)
- Work experience opportunities
- Graffiti Art
- Constructive debates (on issues affecting young people)
- Holiday Programmes/schemes
- Workshops

Community Links and ASTA also support the Jack Petchey Awards scheme and this allows the young peoples achievement, what ever it may be, to be recognised.
What’s next?
The ASTA has an ongoing curriculum which is done on a quarterly basis and what goes on is decided fully by the young people.
In terms of the building, we have some refurbishments planned in the next coming months such as; re-painting of the centre (inside), new furniture including new sofas and a T.V. and the release of the music done by the young people at the ASTA studio.
We are also working, in tandem with the young people on some kind of new publicity including the design of an ASTA log and a generic flyer for use in detached youth work.
What's on...for the Community
The centre hosts the local TRA (Tenants and Residents Association) meeting and all people living in the community (INCLUDING YOUNG PEOPLE!!) are welcome to come along and discuss any issues they feel are affecting the community. The meeting is held the first Monday of every month, if the Monday falls on a holiday it will be on the following week, this has been running since 1987. (The records show).
The ASTA also puts on Community Fun Days where all members of the community are welcome to come along and enjoy a fun day out with bouncers, face-painting, spinning wheel and free fruit and water. These events are sometimes done in partnership with the London Borough of Newham.
On some occasions we are also used as a Polling Station for a day and this can sometimes cause us to move/ change provisions on at the centre that day, however this is always advertised with enough notice so that minimum disruption is caused.
