Britain’s Everyday Heroes
Community Links worked with Prime Minister Gordon Brown to produce this book telling the stories of 33 individuals whose commitment to a community or cause has informed and inspired him.
We are grateful that proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to Community Links to continue our work.
In this book, Gordon Brown tells the stories of 33 everyday heroes – ordinary people whose willing commitment to a cause or a community has informed and inspired him. The stories tell of a real Britain neither flawless nor broken down but caring, innovative, passionate and determined.
‘This book is about people who have given me a fresh insight into the needs and aspirations of our country, what is great about it now and how it can become greater in the future. It is the story of Britain’s everyday heroes: the kind of heroes who live next door, and in the next street and throughout our neighbourhoods – the kind of heroes we might ourselves become.’ Gordon Brown
He tells of the modest unassuming woman who has been the inspiration behind community reconciliation in Northern Ireland; the campaigner who has established the world’s first Fairtrade Town; and the volunteers mentoring refugees, tackling gang culture, rehabilitating offenders and helping individuals back into employment. He has met the businesses who combine commercial success with community investment and public servants going far beyond the parameters of their job, giving their time and energy to meet the real needs they witness first hand. He tells the stories of carers, mentors and coaches who give of themselves quietly, every day, never expecting praise or recognition.
