Holding Up The Sky: Love Power and Learning in the Development of a Community
Relationships and the connections forged within the development process are central to both the story and the learning of a new and unusual book written by an experienced UK Community Development worker who went out to rural South Africa to research the essence of development practice.
Threading through a personal journey of learning, the author practitioner recounts a grass roots development initiative that took place in a South African village in a former homeland Trish Bartley presents the findings of her research in this accessible and compassionate book. It has clear relevance to community development workers in the UK as well as those involved in International Development projects with an interest in capacity building.
The book is written in the spirit of questioning and reflection. It celebrates the skills, qualities, knowledge and potential of local people, who are the experts in their own lives.
Author, Trish Bartley says:This book considers people as already intrinsically whole, but who through circumstance or experience have become oppressed, excluded, and marginalised. This profoundly and adversely affects their ability to live dignified, free, healthy, and creative lives. The function of development needs to include processes that support ordinary people to express who they are and put them at the centre of decisions and decision-making that affect their lives.
