local services what we offer

Community Development

Community Links aims to help build stronger communities. Our community workers spend time in local neighbourhoods, getting residents together through activities and events and also supporting individuals and groups who would like to set up their own community schemes.

Community Development

Our Community Development workers are currently spending time in Stratford, Forest Gate, Plaistow, Custom House and South Canning Town to:

  • get residents involved in activities and events that are happening locally
  • identify neighbourhood centres that are hubs of activity for local people where they can start to run more activities for the community.

This work is in progress but if you are in South Canning Town and would like to know more, call into the Hoskins Centre, Hoskins Close, Canning Town. Alternatively you can contact Cecilia Jaros or Joanne Walker, our Community Development workers.

The Asta Centre, 14a Camel Road, Silvertown, E16 2DE

The centre hosts the local TRA (Tenants and Residents Association) meeting and all people living in the community (INCLUDING YOUNG PEOPLE!!) are welcome to come along and discuss any issues they feel are affecting the community. The meeting is held the first Monday of every month.  If the Monday falls on a holiday it will be on the following week. This has been running since 1987. (The records show!)

The ASTA also puts on Community Fun Days where all members of the community are welcome to come along and enjoy a fun day out with bouncers, face-painting, spinning wheel and free fruit and water. These events are sometimes done in partnership with the London Borough of Newham.

On some occasions we are also used as a Polling Station for a day and this can sometimes cause us to move/ change provisions on at the centre that day, however this is always advertised with enough notice so that minimum disruption is caused.

For more information, call in to speak to Jason Forde, Centre Manager.
